Culver City Surf Shack

Soon after buying their first home, Michael and Robin planned to convert their garage into a rental unit. They wanted a bright space with maximum privacy, so they chose to add skylights and high clerestory windows along the backyard. A garage conversion allowed them to keep the placement along the property line—now they have a beautiful rental ADU and a full backyard to themselves!

The Existing Conditions

  • Garage placement very close to the existing house, making privacy a top priority
  • Due to the small lot, two of the garage’s exterior walls are right on the property line
  • The homeowners intended to use their ADU as a long-term rental

The Design Decisions

  • Space constraints necessitated an under-counter combo washer/dryer
  • A walk-in shower makes the bathroom feel luxurious and open
  • High clerestory windows and new skylights allow for both privacy and natural light
  • A new outdoor area extends the living space
