Contemporary Micro-Studio

Phillip approached Otto ADU just after starting a new business, looking to create an extra stream of income. He wasn't convinced that such a small garage could be converted into an apartment until he saw Otto's plan for the space. Phillip chose the Contemporary finish package and added upgraded cabinetry to make the small space feel ultra-clean. A murphy bed that doubles as a couch creates a living space large enough to entertain guests. A bench that doubles as a coffee table and a dining table that doubles as a desk keep this small space versatile and livable.

The Existing Conditions

  • An extremely small floor plan challenged Otto to think creatively
  • The garage’s placement along the property line prevented windows in certain walls
  • The existing siding was wood, which was unable to meet current fire rating requirements and therefore had to be replaced
  • Overall, the garage was in very poor condition and needed structural rehabilitation

The Design Decisions

  • Double-duty furniture makes this small space multifunctional
  • The homeowner had a lot of fun selecting custom colors for the unit!
  • Surprisingly enough, Otto was able to fit a full kitchen and large bathroom
  • Since some of the walls weren’t eligible for windows, an added skylight brings in natural light
