Airy 1-Bedroom

Carlos wanted to make sure his mom had a steady stream of income for the rest of her life, so he hired Otto to convert her garage into an ADU. He envisioned a one-bedroom unit with a small outdoor space for the tenant. Otto's base price included the fridge, microwave vent, range, and washer/dryer; Carlos chose the Classic finish package and added a dishwasher, as well as a custom island and accent wall. Vaulted ceilings and skylights help the space feel spacious and airy.

The Existing Conditions

  • The unusual shape of the lot contained many fragments of unused space
  • Large garage allowed for many different layout possibilities

The Design Decisions

  • Otto was able to fit in a fully enclosed bedroom, which increased the comfort and rental value of the unit
  • The vaulted ceiling opens the space up, while a skylight brings in natural light
  • A second entrance accesses a custom private patio
  • Large closets and lots of kitchen storage help make this unit feel like a real home
