Age-In-Place Unit

John and Julie were using their garage as storage, but wanted to move their parents closer to home and decided to build an ADU. They knew that they wanted to incorporate as many age-in-place factors as they could, and worked with Otto to include an accessible bath, wider doorways to accommodate wheelchairs, and cork flooring. The bath features nonslip tile, wheelchair turn-around space, and a roll-in shower with grab bars. Now they have a beautiful space and the peace of mind that their loved ones are right next door.

The Existing Conditions

  • Given the ADU's intended use as an age-in-place unit, accessibility was paramount
  • The existing structure had extensive water and foundation damage that needed remediation

The Design Decisions

  • The bathroom features luxury tile and a roll-in shower, giving it spa-like feel while still maintaining accessibility
  • The homeowner chose custom windows and doors with a slim profile for a more contemporary look
  • A fully-equipped kitchen makes cooking a delight
  • The vaulted ceiling allows for plenty of extra storage above the bathroom
